Weekly Devotion"Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."  John 16:32-33

To be effective, God's grace and peace must penetrate to our very core, yet I ever marvel how well the Lord knows me. He is never surprised or put off by my many failings. In this passage Jesus offers advance words of comfort to the doubts and second-guessing his disciples will feel after they all abandon him during his arrest. In a single sentence of prophetic insight, he speaks volumes to their soon-to-be-despondent souls - comfort that echoes throughout all ages.

Everything the disciples had come to know, accept, and expect as their very present kingdom reality would be suddenly shaken to its core in a swirl of confusion. After fleeing the scene of the garden arrest, each would first ponder how God could let such a thing happen. Then the shock of their unfaithfulness would flood their thoughts: "How could I let the Lord down so badly? How could I have done that?"

Jesus' words of Peace are offered to them and to us. God was not surprised, either, by the events or their behavior. All was happening according to plan. " I've spoken to you that in Me you may have peace"

The lesson proves timeless as, with David, we marvel how Father " knows my sitting down and rising up; You understand my every thought" I've gradually come to see that it's best to just get over my old, bad self whenever I fall short. Father is not surprised. When I fail in the promised tribulations of this life, I confess, receive His forgiveness, and trust in His cleansing power to make future failings fewer. And so is the cycle of life and peace in the Spirit: "forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead" we press on.
