*Weekly Devotion* "But we will devote ourselves to prayer, and to the ministry of the Word."
Three principles stand out from this week's devotional text. First, there is the commitment of the apostles to their principle call: a life of prayer and study. There is no lack of a servant's spirit to be attached to the apostles' statement of verse two that it was not "desirable for us to neglect the word of God to serve tables." Rather, it is a reiteration of priority and a release of gifted men to serve in their God-given gifts that needs within the local community would be met (v. 1).
If the supremacy of the spiritual is seen in the apostles' decision to devote themselves to prayer and the study of God's Word, the sanctity of the secular is found for us in verse three. All work is to be done "for the glory of God" (1 Cor. 10:31). A life of prayer infuses our work with an empowerment of the Spirit and not only meets needs but is met with the approval of God and man (vv. 5a,6,7a).
Finally, the order of Acts 6:4 is important for our consideration: First prayer, then the Word. Before we read Scripture, we must ask God to illuminate it to our minds (1 Cor. 2:10-12; 3:2; John 16:13-15). Prayer prepares us to hear from God through His Word! Finally, it is a reminder for us to pray for those who teach His Word among us that their life is a commitment to a life of prayer (Col. 4:2-4) which will demonstrate itself in their character and in the empowerment God brings to their teaching of His Word.
