Weekly Devotion   "Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart"
Luke 18:1 (NKJV)

This verse serves as both a reminder and a challenge to us. Jesus teaches us here that prayer must be a determined, passionate activity. This instruction from Jesus was so important that He gave us a parable (verses 2 - 5) to illustrate its meaning.

If we are passionate about something, it is because the thing we want or the activity we are engaged in is most precious and desirable to us. The widow in the parable was determined, most likely even desperate, to have justice and gain what was due her. She pursued this with such passion that the unjust judge finally gave in to her persistent demands, just to be rid of her constant petitioning. and shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though he bears long with them?" (verse 7)

When we are passionate about playing a particular sport or creating a special craft or learning a new skill, we devote our entire time and energy and focus to that endeavor. This is the passionate devotion Jesus expects of us in prayer. Prayer must be an all-engrossing activity for us. I must confess that I am as guilty as anyone of allowing other passions to take precedence over prayer, and of giving up when there seems to be no response. "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41) "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." (Galations 6:9)

May the Lord help us overcome our natural weaknesses, our tendency to despair and to give up the fight. In our desperate need, may we make prayer our passionate pursuit each day. Our heavenly Father has promised to reward our persistent faithfulness.
